Conservatives Trying to 'Gut' Environmental Assessments

Apr 03, 2010 06:00 am | By Kevin Ma | St. Albert Gazette

Changes in budget could mean less scrutiny in oilsands

The public is at risk of another Walkerton if the government passes proposed changes to the federal environmental assessment act, says a major environmental group.

The federal government proposed changes to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act last week. Unusually, the changes were buried in a bill related to this year’s budget.

Bill C-9, which implements parts of the federal budget, was tabled March 29. Buried in amongst the usual tweaks to income tax law is a proposed change to section 15 of the assessment act — a change not mentioned in budget documents.

Arctic Oil Spill Could Be Catastrophic

By Andrew Mayeda, Canwest News Service May 26, 2010

A major oil spill in the Beaufort Sea could have a "catastrophic" impact on Canada's Arctic ecosystem and worsen the effects of climate change, a former senior government scientist has warned.

William Adams, a former scientist at Environment Canada, contributed to a decades-old study that simulated an oil spill of roughly 1,000 barrels per day in water about 10 metres deep in the Canadian portion of the Beaufort Sea. It remains the only "comprehensive" study of its kind, Adams said.

"I believe drilling in that area would be extremely risky," Adams told the House of Commons natural resources committee Tuesday.

What's So Bad About Cooperatives?

The cooperative movement enjoyed considerable growth throughout Great Britain and the Commonwealth, where local cooperatives have been federated into national wholesale and retail distributive enterprises and where a large proportion of the population has membership.

Various examples of cooperative organization are also found in the Scandinavian countries, Israel, the People's Republic of China, Russia, and France. In the United States the cooperative movement began in the 19th cent., first among workers and then among farmers.

Here is an interesting green cooperative, known as the Cleveland Model

Pro-Democracy Rally in Orillia - Say No to Proroguing Parliament

About 300 people showed up to protest Proroguing parliament on Saturday, at 1 pm.

Here is a letter to the Packet and Times from a local Green Supporter.Letter to Editor

Comments by Elizabeth May and Deputy Leader Adriane Carr:
"This idea of shutting down Parliament whenever it is convenient is unacceptable and Mr. Harper must be held accountable." Said May, "If Harper won’t govern, he should step aside and let others demonstrate that there are true leaders in Canada who realize the importance of Parliament and who are willing to work for Canadians—even during the Olympics."

"These latest shenanigans show the urgent need for electoral reform, to fix our broken Democracy and bring the voice of Canadians to Parliament in a truly representative House and Senate. Stephen Harper has crushed dissent within and outside his one-man party and millions of Canadians are having their voices ignored," said Carr. "It is time for change."

Canada is immersed in a complicated conflict in Afganistan, where we want to bring stability to a country in turmoil. Canadian soldiers have traditionally been peacekeepers, but there is no peace to keep in Afganistan.

What will be Canada's future role as part of NATO and the United Nations? It's time for more intelligent debate and less name-calling in our parliament and in our communities.

Sustainable Development

The Alberta tar sands is the location of world’s largest energy project, ultimately covering an area the size of Florida. And it produces the world’s dirtiest, most expensive, and arguably most dangerous oil. Who will pay for the disastrous environmental, social, and political costs of the tar sands?

The notion of integrating the environment and economics has been slowly growing for at least the last 15 years. Some economists of great reputation question the wisdom of our current thinking of attempting to constantly grow the economy. Well then, how do we measure success?

New Elizabeth May Book Released

(from the publisher) We Canadians are waking up from our long political slumber to realize that there will not be change unless we insist upon it. We have a presidential-style prime minister without the checks and balances of either the US or the British systems. Attack ads run constantly, backbenchers and cabinet ministers alike are muzzled, committees are deadlocked, and civility has disappeared from the House of Commons.

In Losing Confidence, Elizabeth May outlines these and other problems of our political system, and offers inspiring solutions to the dilemmas we face. to find out more
